What is Kratom and what are its effects?
Have you ever heard of kratom and do you know what its effects are? Kratom is a natural remedy that has been used in Eastern countries for centuries. It is also becoming increasingly popular here in the West, with people using it as a natural stimulant or painkiller. In this blog you can read all about the effects and how it works.
What is kratom?
The kratom tree (Mitragyna speciosa) can be found in various Asian countries. The tree is related to the coffee plant and is found in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, among others. Kratomis made from the leaves of the tree. These are dried and then ground into powder. There are different types of kratom, namely white, red and green.
In Asia, kratom has been used for a long time as a stimulant and painkiller. Workers who do heavy physical work chew on the leaves to be able to continue their work. What is special is that kratom was actually always illegal in Thailand, for example, in the last century, while the country was one of the largest producers of kratom.
Is kratom now comparable to opioids? The most important active substance in kratom is mirtragynine. There are also several other active alkaloids present in the plant. It is a fact that kratom actively binds to opioid receptors in our brains, just like other drugs such as heroin and codeine. But because, when you use kratom, you are using a completely natural product, and it works according to a unique mechanism, kratom is different from other opioids. It has fewer negative effects and the effects are less powerful. However, there are also risks associated with kratom. We will discuss this below.
What are the effects of kratom?
Kratom can be used in different ways and therefore has different effects. At a low dose (1 to 2 grams) kratom has a stimulating effect. It has an uplifting effect, you get more energy and feel awake.
At a higher dose (on average 3 to 5 grams) the effects are actually calming and soothing. You feel more tired, drowsy and numb. It is therefore logical that a lower dose of kratom is used when you need more energy, comparable to a few cups of coffee. Higher doses are often used for pain and sleep problems.
The type of kratom you use also plays a role. The different colors arise during the growth of the tree. Young leaves have white veins, half-grown leaves are green and leaves of older, mature trees have red veins.
If you want to benefit from the stimulating effect of kratom, you can go for the white kratom, which gives energy. Red kratom has a more calming effect and green kratom has a balanced effect. Which one suits your preferences best is something to try out for yourself.
Is kratom addictive?
An important question when you would like to use kratom is whether it is addictive. It is important to realize that a lot of things are addictive, even something like coffee, which is seen as harmless. If you use something day in, day out, multiple times a day, it is often difficult to stop.
Kratom also has addictive properties and that is because it works on your opioid system. Tolerance and dependence develop. However, this is not as strong as with heavy drugs such as fentanyl and heroin. Due to the possibility of addiction, it is wise not to use kratom daily.
If you have used kratom structurally and want to stop, you will usually suffer from withdrawal symptoms. These are the most common symptoms:
- Craving for the next dose
- Runny nose
- Hot flashes
- Nausea and vomiting
- Tremors
- Diarrhea
- Mood disorders (anxiety, depression)
- Restlessness
- Muscle pain
- Insomnia
If you want to stop using kratom, it is best to gradually reduce the dosage. This can reduce withdrawal symptoms.
