What is lemon tek and how do you make it?

Anyone who uses magic mushrooms has probably come across the term lemon tek. But what exactly is it? You can eat mushrooms raw or dried, but most people don't like the taste. Drinking lemon tek is a good way to avoid this problem. It can also make your trip a bit more intense. In this blog you can read how to make it.

    How does lemon tek work?

Magic mushrooms contain a special substance, psilocybin, which makes you trip after ingesting it. That is an amazing experience. But when you take mushrooms, you have to endure the earthy, somewhat musty taste. And it can also happen that you get nauseous. This is one of the most common side effects, along with headaches, dizziness and changes in blood pressure, according to research from 2024. That's why people have been looking for a way to take mushrooms that doesn't cause this problem. This can be done by mixing mushrooms with lemon juice.

What makes this such a good combination is of course the strong taste of the lemon that dominates. But that's not all. Lemon juice is very acidic and the acidity helps break down the active substances in the mushrooms. Psilocybin, which is normally only converted in your digestive system, is now converted into the psychoactive substance psilocin in the glass. The difficult to digest substances (chitin) in the mushroom are also partly broken down, making it easier for the body to digest them.

Although no official research has been done on this yet, people indicate that lemon tek helps prevent nausea in this way. Furthermore, it seems that the trip, due to the faster conversion of psilocybin into psilocin, comes on faster and can also be more intense. However, it does last a bit shorter, because the active substances are broken down faster (about 1 or 2 hours shorter). That is also something to take into account.

    Does only lemon work?

Lemon tek is of course made with lemon juice. But if you are not a fan of lemon, you can also use other acidic fruits. It is important that the acidity or pH is low enough. Lemon juice has a pH of 2, which is very low (our stomach acid has a pH of 1.4). But limes and oranges can also be effective, despite the fact that their pH is slightly higher. Try to find a fruit juice that has a pH of 3.5 or lower.

How do you make lemon tek?

Do you think it would be a good idea to take your mushroom dose in the form of lemon tek? Below we explain how to make it and fortunately it is very simple.

All you need is a paring knife, your mushroom dosage (finely ground), a lemon and a glass or cup.

This is how you make it:

    • Put the ground mushrooms in the glass or cup.
    • Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the fruit over your glass.
    • Take as much juice as you need, at least enough to cover everything with the juice.
    • If you don't have enough juice, you can add some water.
    • Let the lemon tek steep for 20 to 25 minutes. This time is needed to break down the hard-to-digest fibers.
    • Stir the juice well again and then drink the glass in one go.

Now your trip can begin. You can also use lemon tek if you want to microdose. Then you can use a shot glass instead of a regular glass.

    Alternative: Lemon tek tea

Doesn't your mouth water at the thought of a glass of lemon juice? Fortunately, there is another alternative, namely lemon tek tea. The preparation is almost the same as with regular lemon tek. Follow the first three steps, but after the lemon juice, fill the glass with hot water and a tea bag (you can choose the flavor yourself). So boil some water, but let it cool for a few minutes before adding it to the lemon juice and the mushrooms. Boiling water breaks down the psilocybin in mushrooms. Let the tea steep for a while and then stir everything together.

    Tripping with lemon tek

Do you have a sensitive stomach and do you feel nauseous when you take mushrooms? Then lemon tek can make your experience with mushrooms a bit more pleasant. Even if you have trouble with the taste, lemon tek is a good alternative. But keep in mind that the trip can be a lot more intense and can come on quickly. That's for sure important if you have little or no experience with magic mushrooms. Using lemon tek could also make a bad trip more intense.

Tripping with magic mushrooms is generally safe. However, it can involve risks (see Medical News Today) and cause unexpected effects (such as feelings of anxiety, confusion and disorientation). Tripping is also not suitable for people who suffer from mental disorders, such as depression or schizophrenia.

Be careful when using magic mushrooms. Stick to the recommended dosage. Start with a mild mushroom species (for example Mexican or Thai) and always ask your doctor for advice if you are in doubt about whether you can use mushrooms. It is important to be in a safe, calm space for a trip, and it is a good idea to have a tripsitter stay with you.

Lemon tek can increase the intensity of a trip, which increases the risk of adverse effects such as anxiety, panic, confusion and disorientation, especially in beginners or those with a low tolerance to psychedelics. In addition, it can affect blood pressure, heart rate and digestion.
