Do you dream of growing your own mushrooms at home? With our growing kit for Wig fungus (Lion's mane) this is easier than you think. Here's a simple guide to growing, caring for and harvesting this delicious mushroom.
Introduction:
The Pruikzwam (Lion's Mane / Hericium Erinaceus) is a delicious and healthy mushroom with a unique flavour and texture. This guide will help you successfully grow Wig Mushrooms with our grow kit.
Grow kit contents:
The grow kit contains substrate consisting of Master's Mix, a combination of soya hulls and hardwood. The mycelium of the Wig Mushroom is already present in the substrate, it just needs some time to become visible.
Supplies:
Besides the culture kit, you will need a plant sprayer and/or a damp cloth. After the cuts are in place, it is recommended to spray daily until mushrooms start growing.
Preparation:
Remove the culture kit from the box and fold up the bag as shown in photo 1. The mycelium of the Whig mushroom often needs a few days to recover from the trip. This way, the mycelium can breathe again and complete the last bit of colonisation. Once you see small white balls forming on the substrate (mini wig mushrooms), it is time to make the slices. Make two incisions of about 5 cm in the block, preferably at the spots of the black lines as shown in picture number 2. Then fold the culture kit closed again as when received. For this, you can use the elastic band provided. Place the kit on a clean surface. By placing the kit on a damp cloth on a plate, you increase the humidity in the immediate vicinity. Make sure the area where you place the grow kit is free of draughts.
Care and maintenance:
The Pruikzwam needs high humidity and sufficient oxygen to grow well. Ideally, humidity should be around 70-80%, but our strain has been selected to grow well even at lower humidity levels. Keep the temperature between 18-24°C for optimal growth.
Harvesting:
The right time to harvest Whig mushrooms is when the spores have not yet been released. This is usually when the 'moons', or tooth-like structures of the fungus, have reached their maximum length and before they begin to discolour or shrivel. The fungus then still has a bright white colour. You can carefully pull the Pruikzwammen off the substrate. Try to leave as little residue as possible on the substrate. You can expect two harvests from this grow kit, the first being the largest. With some luck, there may be a small third harvest, but by then the grow kit will be almost completely exhausted. Between harvests, ensure sufficient humidity to encourage a second growth.
Storage:
Store the harvested Pruikzwammen in a paper bag in the fridge. They will stay fresh for about a week, but check them regularly for signs of spoilage such as discolouration or an unpleasant smell.
Recipe suggestions:
The Whig mushroom is versatile and tasty in a variety of dishes. For example, try Wig mushroom crab cakes, a delicious and unique way to enjoy this mushroom.
